Santiago Spirito began painting in the streets following the Argentine economic crisis of 2001 as part of the stencil collective Vomito Attack, a politically motivated group who used stencil art to unleash caustic political commentary and anti-consumerist messages throughout the city.
Santiago departed from Vomito Attack in 2007 to begin creating independently under the name Cabaio Stencil. While his early work was founded in fiery protest and pointed criticism, his solo work is almost entirely apolitical. Instead of using stencils to criticise and attack, his focus has shifted to exploring art for art’s sake,
beautifying the city with his carefully selected images which highlight aesthetics more than politics.
His murals feature gorgeous explorations of colour, in which layer upon layer of intricate stencilled images overlap to create stunning kaleidoscopic murals.
