Japanese artist Yamauchi Yu wanted to join these two facets and the result is mind-blowing. He spent five months living as an hermit in a hut, near the summit of the snow-capped symbol of Japan, all in the name of his “DAWN” project. The idea was quite simple : shoot the sunrise daily and at the same spot. And in the land of the rising sun, the pictures are astonishing. This is a simple beauty that Yu offers us, an understated aesthetics but far from austerity and starkness : the pastel colors and the nebulous forms set by the bushy mist replace technical demonstration and plastic overindulgence. All said, joining the religious and artistic; indeed, the Japanese photographer here places the spectator in an omniscient and universal view. And above all, reminds him that beauty is simple.
